Roman chamomile yields an essential oil that is light blue when fresh. Extracted from the flower and the upper parts of the plant, it boasts excellent calming properties, reputed to ease irritation and impatience, as well as alleviate PMS and other menstrual and menopausal concerns. This evergreen herb, with its delightful fresh apple scent, is predominantly cultivated in France, Belgium, and Eastern Europe.
This remarkable oil is renowned for its efficacy in addressing skin issues such as acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, dry or itchy skin, and various allergies. It is also believed to aid in relieving abdominal pain, gall bladder problems, and throat infections, alongside providing comfort for allergies, hay fever, and asthma. When used in diluted solutions, it can calm children experiencing colic, irritability, diarrhoea, and teething troubles. In a vaporiser, it works wonders to soothe headaches, nervous complaints, and migraines. While this oil is gentle enough for use with children and babies, it is always wise to consult an expert before administering it.
The medicinal use of chamomile dates back thousands of years to ancient civilizations including the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. The Egyptians dedicated this revered herb to the sun god, with a papyrus document dating to 2800 BC recording its use in treating skin disorders. Chamomile oil has even been used in the embalming process. Hippocrates, the esteemed Greek physician, is said to have employed chamomile as a herbal remedy. In mythology, chamomile is celebrated as one of the nine sacred herbs bestowed by Wodan, the god of the underworld, to enhance the lives of mortals.
