Basil Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the basil plant. This greenish-yellow, crisp-smelling essential oil is often used in aromatherapy to awaken the mind, steady the nerves, and bring about clarity of thought. Basil originates from tropical Asia and the Pacific Islands but is now grown throughout Europe and the USA.
Basil oil is renowned for its therapeutic properties, particularly for the respiratory tract, making it beneficial for conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and sinus infections. It is also effective in treating nervous disorders, stress-related headaches, and migraines. This oil is believed to alleviate intellectual fatigue while enhancing clarity and mental strength.
Additionally, basil essential oil may help ease constipation, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, and is considered supportive for menstrual issues. It is known to relieve gout by reducing uric acid levels in the blood and is also useful for arthritis, refreshing the skin and healing insect bites.
However, it is advised that pregnant women and children under 16 avoid using this oil.
This revered herb is popular in India, where it has been used in prayer and healing for centuries. The leaves of the plant are chewed as part of prayer ceremonies, soaked in coconut water or holy water to distribute after prayers in temples. They are also chewed to soothe sore throats and coughs, while a decoction made of tulasi (basil) leaves is consumed to alleviate painful throats and respiratory issues.
