Latin Name: Pogostemon Cablin. Part of Plant Used: Dried Leaves. Source: Indonesia. Extraction Method: Steam Distillation. Patchouli Oil is extracted from the Pogostemon cablin plant of the mint family and boasts a rich musky-sweet, spicy aroma. Native to Malaysia and India, it is known as ‘puchaput’. The term patchouli comes from the Tamil ‘pachchai ilai’, meaning ‘green leaf’. This exquisite oil is derived from young leaves that are dried and fermented before undergoing steam distillation, enhancing its fragrance and potency with age.
Patchouli oil is highly regarded in skincare, particularly for its remarkable ability to assist in scar healing. In Eastern cultures, it is often utilised in potpourris and sachets, infusing linens and clothes with its captivating scent while naturally repelling bedbugs and insects. The oil is known for its balancing effect on emotions, creating an intimate and inviting atmosphere. When used in an oil burner, it alleviates feelings of anxiety and depression.
Incorporating patchouli oil into your bath water can benefit skin and scalp conditions, combat fungal infections, reduce fluid retention, break down cellulite, and ease constipation. Its exceptional tissue regenerating properties promote healing and help fight infections, making it beneficial for ailments such as acne, eczema, weeping sores, ulcers, and athlete’s foot.
Historically, patchouli was placed between Indian cashmere shawls before their journey to Victorian England, serving to protect the fine garments from moths. Without the signature scent of dried patchouli leaves, these shawls would not have found their way to the English market. In Europe and America, patchouli oil and incense gained immense popularity during the 1960s and 70s among the hippie movement, as its distinctive aroma masked body odour and the scent of burnt cannabis. It was also a favoured hair conditioner for dreadlocks. Moreover, in numerous Asian countries, patchouli is revered as an antidote to snakebite.
