Latin Name: Citrus Aurantifolia
Part Of Plant Used: Fruit Peel
Source: Mexico
Extraction Method: Cold Expression
This Lime Essential Oil is derived from Citrus aurantifolia, also known as Mexican or West Indian lime, as well as sour lime. The oil is extracted from the peel of the unripe skin by cold expression or from the peel and/or the whole ripe fruit by steam distillation. Lime oil boasts a sharp, citrus aroma that instantly uplifts your spirits, and it has a delicate pale yellow to light olive hue.
When used in an oil burner, lime oil stimulates a tired mind, helping to ease anxiety, apathy, and feelings of depression. It is beneficial for reducing fevers associated with colds, sore throats, and flu. Additionally, it boosts immunity while alleviating coughs, bronchitis, sinusitis, and asthma. Lime oil is also said to be helpful for arthritis, rheumatism, poor circulation, and may support efforts against obesity and cellulite. Its properties extend to skincare; it effectively reduces oiliness, combats acne, and assists with herpes, insect bites, and cuts. However, please note that oil obtained through cold expression can cause photosensitivity and may irritate the skin.
Limes originally hail from Asia but are now cultivated in most warm regions, including Italy, the West Indies, and the Americas. The lime is green when raw and ripens to a vibrant yellow, typically measuring about two inches in diameter. Introduced into Europe by the Moors, limes later found their way to the Americas. Although they contain less Vitamin C than lemons, limes were historically carried on long sea voyages to help prevent sailors from suffering scurvy due to Vitamin C deficiency.
