Roman chamomile yields an essential oil that is light blue when fresh, extracted from the flowers and upper parts of the plant. Renowned for its calming properties, it is believed to ease irritation and impatience, while also providing support for PMS and other menstrual and menopausal issues. This evergreen herb emits a fresh apple aroma and is primarily cultivated in France, Belgium, and Eastern Europe.
This remarkable herb is excellent for addressing skin concerns such as acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, dry or itchy skin, and allergies. It is also thought to assist with abdominal pain, gall bladder issues, and throat infections, helping to alleviate allergies, hay fever, and asthma. When diluted, this oil is beneficial for calming children experiencing colic, irritability, diarrhoea, and teething. Used in a vaporiser, it soothes headaches, nervous complaints, and migraines. While gentle enough for children and babies, it is advisable to consult an expert before use.
The medicinal use of chamomile has a rich history, dating back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. The Egyptians dedicated it to the sun god, and a papyrus document from 2800 BC records its application in treating skin disorders. Chamomile oil was even used in the embalming process. The great Greek physician Hippocrates is said to have utilised chamomile as a herbal remedy. In mythology, chamomile is considered one of the nine sacred herbs granted by Wodan, the god of the underworld, to mortals for the enhancement of their lives.
