Patchouli Oil is extracted from the Pogostemon cablin plant of the mint family, offering a rich musky-sweet, spicy aroma. This treasured plant is native to Malaysia and India, known locally as ‘puchaput’. The term ‘patchouli’ originates from the Tamil phrase ‘pachchai ilai’, which translates to ‘green leaf’. The oil is derived from the young leaves, which are dried and fermented before undergoing steam distillation. Over time, this oil develops a more potent fragrance and depth, enhancing its allure.

Valued in skincare, patchouli oil is particularly effective for scar healing. In many eastern cultures, it is commonly used in potpourris and sachets, providing a lovely scent while naturally repelling bedbugs and other insects. The oil is renowned for its ability to balance emotions and create an amorous atmosphere. When used in an oil burner, it helps to ease anxiety and alleviate feelings of depression. Additionally, adding it to bath water is believed to address skin and scalp issues, combat fungal infections, reduce fluid retention, diminish cellulite, and relieve constipation.

Patchouli oil boasts remarkable tissue regenerating properties, accelerating healing and fighting infections. It is beneficial for conditions such as acne, eczema, weeping sores, ulcers, and athlete’s foot. Historically, patchouli leaves were placed between Indian cashmere shawls before their journey to Victorian England, serving to protect the merchandise from moths. Without the signature scent of dried patchouli leaves, these shawls would not have sold in England.

In Europe and America, patchouli oil and incense flourished in popularity during the 1960s and 70s, particularly among the hippie community, as its scent effectively masked body odour and the aroma of burnt cannabis. It also served as a natural hair conditioner for dreadlocks. In various Asian cultures, patchouli is even employed as an antidote to snakebite.
